Chapter Five
A New Partnership
A New Partnership
The quiet of the Mercer Street Gallery was supposed to be my sanctuary. For seven days, I had deliberately tuned out the frantic hum of the corporate world, ignoring the dozens of missed calls and increasingly desperate emails from a certain tall, athletic CEO. Walking away from the firm—and from Ethan—had been the hardest thing I’d ever done, but it was a boundary I’d needed to draw. I refused to be a casualty of his control issues, no matter how deeply I had fallen for him.
I stopped in front of a massive, abstract canvas painted in tempestuous strokes of slate gray and brilliant gold. It reminded me of him. It reminded me of us—stormy, brilliant, and utterly chaotic.
"I spent three days trying to figure out which gallery you’d hide in," a low, familiar voice murmured from behind me.
My heart skipped a beat, but I forced my posture to remain rigid, refusing to let him see how easily he could still shatter my composure. I turned slowly, bracing myself.
Ethan stood a few feet away, and for the first time since I had known him, the pristine, untouchable power broker looked uncharacteristically undone. His dark hair, usually styled to perfection, was slightly disheveled, as if he’d spent the day running his hands through it. His signature designer suit jacket was gone, his white shirt collar unbuttoned to reveal the strong line of his throat, and his tie was nowhere to be seen. He looked exhausted, with faint dark circles under his gray eyes, but his gaze was locked onto me with a fierce, burning intensity.
"You shouldn't have come here, Ethan," I said, my voice steady, though my pulse was hammering against my ribs. "I made my terms very clear when I handed you my resignation."
"You did," he agreed, stepping closer. The scent of his familiar, woody cologne drifted over me, mixing with the cool, sterile air of the gallery. "And I spent the last week realizing that I’ve been a complete fool."
I raised an eyebrow, keeping my sharp tongue ready. "Only a week? I would have thought a brilliant mind like yours could diagnose that sooner."
A faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips, but it quickly faded into genuine remorse. He took another step, halting just outside my personal space. His tall frame cast a shadow that felt protective rather than imposing, radiating a heat that drew me in despite myself.
"Avery, please. Just listen to me," he said, his voice dropping to a raw, quiet register. "When you walked out of my office, I thought I could just focus on the next deal. I thought I could go back to the way things were before you blew into my life and turned my entire world upside down. But I couldn't. Every meeting I sat in, every strategy I mapped out... it was completely empty. I kept looking across the table, expecting to see you challenging me, cutting through my defenses, making me better."
I swallowed hard, my quietly soft-hearted nature fighting against the protective walls I had built. "You tried to sideline me, Ethan. You tried to control me because you couldn't handle your own feelings."
"I know," he confessed, and the sheer vulnerability in his eyes took my breath away. This was Ethan—the man who never apologized, who never yielded. To see him standing here, completely stripped of his usual armor, was more disarming than any corporate maneuver he could have pulled. "I was terrified. I’ve built my entire life on being in control, on never letting anyone close enough to hurt me. But losing you... it made me realize that all the success in the world means absolutely nothing if I don't have someone brilliant and fierce to share it with. I don't want to manage you, Avery. I want to partner with you."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, leather-bound folder, holding it out to me like an offering.
I looked from the folder to his face. "What is this?"
"A new contract," he said, his voice steady but filled with a quiet plea. "A full partnership. Equal shares, equal authority. No more reporting to me. We run the firm together. I’ve already had the board draft the paperwork. It’s yours, if you’ll have it. And if you’ll have me."
My breath hitched. A full partnership. It was everything I had ever dreamed of, everything I had fought for. But more than the title, it was the surrender in his eyes. Ethan was yielding. He was giving up the absolute control he clung to so desperately, offering me his trust, his power, and his heart.
"And professionally?" I asked, my voice softening as I stepped closer, closing the distance between us until I could feel the warmth radiating from his chest. "How do I know you won't fall back into your old habits the moment we disagree on a strategy?"
"Because you won't let me," he said, a trace of his confident, arrogant smile returning, though it was softened by a deep tenderness. "And because I don't want a yes-woman. I want you. Sharp-tongued, ambitious, and completely my equal."
I looked down at the folder, then back up at his handsome, tired face. The anger that had sustained me for the past week melted away, replaced by a profound warmth. True strength wasn't about keeping my walls up; it was about having the courage to tear them down when the right person was standing on the other side.
"I have a few edits to the contract," I murmured, a playful spark returning to my eyes.
Ethan let out a low, breathless laugh, his shoulders visibly relaxing. "I would expect nothing less."
He reached out, his large, warm hand gently cupping my cheek. His thumb brushed over my cheekbone, a gesture so tender it made my chest ache with a sudden, sharp longing. "Does this mean you accept my terms?"
"Only if you accept mine," I whispered.
"Always," he breathed.
Ethan leaned down, and then his lips were on mine.
The kiss was nothing like the rushed, desperate clash of our past arguments. It was slow, deep, and filled with a passionate reverence that made my knees weak. I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer, feeling the athletic strength of his body press against mine. He groaned softly, his hands moving to my waist, anchoring me to him as the kiss deepened, filled with a week's worth of unspoken longing and mutual surrender.
When we finally parted, both of us breathless, Ethan rested his forehead against mine. The gray eyes that had once looked so cold and calculating were now warm and filled with an emotion he no longer tried to hide.
"We are going to be unstoppable," he murmured against my lips.
"We already are," I replied, smiling.
The next morning, the glass-and-steel lobby of the firm was as bustling and chaotic as ever. Phones rang, analysts hurried past with tablets, and the air was thick with the scent of expensive coffee and high-stakes ambition.
I stood just inside the revolving doors, smoothing down the front of my tailored emerald-green blazer. A week ago, I had walked out of this building believing I might never return. Today, I was returning on my own terms.
A heavy, warm hand slid into mine, his fingers intertwining with mine. I looked up to see Ethan standing beside me. He was back in his element, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, his hair immaculate, his posture radiating the supreme confidence of a man who ruled his empire. But as he looked down at me, the sharp edge of his expression softened into a private, intimate smile meant only for me.
"Ready, partner?" he asked.
I squeezed his hand, feeling a thrill of pure empowerment course through my veins. We were no longer rivals fighting for dominance. We were a team, balanced and equal, ready to rewrite the rules of the game.
"Ready," I said.
Hand-in-hand, our fingers tightly locked, we stepped forward together, walking past the security desk and into the elevator, ready to conquer the corporate world on our own terms.
